چکیده

An IARC working group of 19 experts in chemical carcinogenesis and seven industrial or governmental observers met in October 1996 in Lyon to prepare updated monographs and evaluations on crystalline and amorphous silica, palygorskite (attapulgite), sepiolite, and wollastonite. Monographs on these agents were published previously in Volume 42 of the IARC Monographs (1). Also evaluated by the group were some natural and synthetic zeolites (excluding erionite), coal dust, and the organic fibers paraaramid fibrils. Erionite, a fibrous component of some natural zeolite deposits in various parts of the world, was evaluated previously as being carcinogenic to humans (Group 1) in Volume 42 and Supplement 7 of the IARCMonographs (1,2).

GENERAL REMARKS ON THE SUBSTANCES eONSIDERED

This sixty-eighth volume of IARC Monographs considers certain forms of crystalIine and amorphous silica, some silicates (palygorskite, also called attapulgite; sepiolite; wollastonite; and some natura1 and synthetic zeolites, exc1uding erionite), coa1 dust and para-aramid fibrils. Some of these agents are fibrous in nature (palygorskite, sepiolite, wollastonite and sorne natural zeolites, as we...

Appendix A: Background Information on Silica

“Silica,” is a term which refers broadly to the mineral compound silicon dioxide (SiO2). Silica can be crystalline or amorphous. Crystalline silica is significantly more hazardous to employees than amorphous silica. In addition to causing the disabling and irreversible lung disease known as silicosis, crystalline silica has been classified as a human carcinogen by the International Agency for R...

General Remarks on the Substances Considered

This volume of the IARC Monographs considers some traditional herbal medicines, including extracts from certain plants of the genera Aristolochia, Rubia, Morinda and Senecio; some mycotoxins, specifically aflatoxins and fumonisin B1; and two industrial chemicals, naphthalene and styrene. Of these, the Monographs have previously evaluated several of the pyrrolizidine alkaloids that occur in cert...

Chlordane and Heptachlor

Chlordane and heptachlor were considered together because of their close structural similarity and because technical-grade products each contain about 10–20% of the other compound. These substances were considered by previous working groups, in 1978 (IARC, 1979), 1987 (IARC, 1987) and 1990 (IARC, 1991). Since that time, new data have become available, and these have been incorporated into the m...

Application of Arc-GIS for zoning of occupational exposure levels to respirable crystalline silica in crushing factories

Introduction: The silica crushing is a process based on crushing, screening and, granulation of various types of silica rocks. The inhalation of silica dust leads to silicosis by causing irreversible fibrosis in lung tissue. The crystalline silica is classified as a human carcinogenic (group I) by the IARC. Azandarian region is one of the largest silica production units in Iran with 40 silica c...
